Saying No Is a Design Skill

Nobody lists it on a job spec. But the designers I trust most are the ones who can decline a request without turning it into a confrontation, and without quietly doing it anyway three days later.

Saying no is not obstruction. It is the part of the job where you protect the thing everyone agreed to build.

The Three Kinds of No

  • Not this. The request conflicts with a decision the team already made. Point at the decision, not at the person.
  • Not yet. The request is reasonable and the timing is wrong. Give it a place to live so it stops coming back as an interruption.
  • Not by me. Sometimes the honest answer is that you are the wrong person, and pretending otherwise costs everyone a month.

Every yes you give without thinking is a no to something you already promised.

How To Make It Land

Bring the trade-off, not the refusal. “We can do that, and it moves the launch by two weeks — which would you rather have?” turns a wall into a decision, and decisions are somebody else’s job to make.

The goal is not to win the conversation. It is to make the cost visible.
